Google is developing a
Soundbox for the Indian
market, similar to the ones
used by Paytm or PhonePe.
The Soundbox is designed to alert
sellers of confirmations for
Unified Payments Interface
(UPI)-based payments.
The company is branding it
as ‘Soundpod by Google
Pay’ and is piloting it with
shopkeepers in north India.
The Soundpods are being
built by Amazon-backed
ToneTag.
Google is testing ways to
improve digital payments
for users and merchants.
The ‘Soundpod by Google Pay’
is accompanied by a QR code
linked with the merchant's
Google Pay for business.
Users can make a payment
by scanning the code with
any UPI-based app.
UPI transactions hit a record
7.82 billion in December,
amounting to Rs 12.82 trillion.
The volume of UPI
transactions in December
was up by 7.12% compared
to November.
